Cumulative rainfall during June 1-July 5 according to the met department is more than 24% below the bench- mark longer period average (LPA), which is still in the ‘deficient’ range. Due to the ‘active’ phase of monsoon during the week over the rain-fed core zone of central India, the deficit in the region has been reduced to 14% from over 50% reported till the end of June. This is expected to give a boost to kharif crops — paddy, pulse, oilseeds and cotton — sowing. Central India accounts for a third of the area under main kharif crops, namely paddy, pulses and oilseeds. A rainfall deficit of 42% in east and northeast India, however, continues to be a matter of concern as it may impact sowing in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. The monsoon season accounts for over 70% of the country’s annual precipitation. The ministry of information and broadcasting on July 1 directed BARC to suspend publishing TV ratings across genres until its licence is renewed under the Television Rating Policy, 2026. It also asked BARC to suspend subscription billing to broadcasters during the period. For the TV industry, ratings serve as the trading currency, helping broadcasters price advertising inventory while enabling advertisers and media agencies to allocate marketing spends and evaluate campaign performance. The industry last witnessed a major ratings blackout during the transition from TAM to BARC in April 2015, when audience data remained unavailable forabout a month. The model has also begun attracting investor interest as organised retail looks beyond premium urban consumers.
